Nobody becomes a software engineer because they love reviewing pull requests. Yet the average senior developer spends 6-8 hours per week doing exactly that. Reading diffs. Checking style. Verifying that tests exist. Making sure the logging is right. Confirming the error handling follows the pattern. It's essential work, and most of it is mind-numbingly mechanical.

How does this affect the broader architecture?
The tragedy of modern code review is that senior developers spend most of their review time on mechanical checks, leaving precious little energy for the conceptual questions that actually need a human brain. By the time they've verified the formatting, checked the test coverage, and confirmed the logging patterns, they're too fatigued to think deeply about the approach.

Are there tests for the new code paths? Does the commit message match the ticket? Is the logging consistent?

They stop checking for missing tests and start questioning assumptions. The quality of feedback goes up dramatically because the reviewer's cognitive budget is spent on the things that actually matter.
Here's the other thing nobody says out loud: code review is the biggest bottleneck in most teams' delivery pipelines. PRs sit in review queues for hours, sometimes days. Not because reviewers are lazy — because they're busy doing their own work and context-switching to review someone else's code is expensive. Every hour a PR sits in a queue is an hour of delay in the delivery pipeline.
The death of manual code review isn't something to mourn. It's something to celebrate. When machines handle the mechanical checks and humans focus on the conceptual questions, everyone wins. Reviews get faster. Feedback gets better. Developers get to do the part of their job they actually enjoy. And the code still gets the scrutiny it deserves — just from the right source for each type of question.
